The old Gatso systems using wet film are costly and increasingly difficult to maintain, so are being replaced by the new IP systems, capable of numberplate recognition, and linked to an automatic monitoring system. Vehicle movements between cameras are timed to give the average speed, which must not be higher than the legal speed limit. The cameras are aimed at the rear of vehicles, with additional illumination at night. I do not know whether exceeding the limit over more than one measured distance on the same journey will result in multiple fines.
