I heard Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson making a very powerful case for the rejection of this bill on the radio this morning. I'm not aware of her particular beliefs but the way she articulated her views suggested that she was not in principle against assisted death. Perhaps our MPs are not weak-minded but shared my view of her arguments. The issue boils down to how to stop the right to die becoming the responsibility to die and it was very clear that this bill did not address this key problem properly. Ultimately it may prove impossible to resolve and it is certainly right to err on the side of caution. |
