..I tell you when. Never on a sunny Thursday in west London in late summer. From now on (I'll remember) that's entirely the wrong day to eat kipper for lunch. No matter how tasty! I thought this an hour ago when - whilst out on a wander seeking inspiration and exercise in equal doses – I came across Lyric Square in Hammersmith. Not the usual Lyric Square with it's fountains and a few shoppers sitting outside Pret fiddling with their boring wraps. But a Lyric Square transformed for the day with a dazzling array of brilliant “cooking stalls”, each offering a mouthwatering display of foods from around the world. There was a sensational-looking curried goat and jerk chicken from Jamaica, a fabulous paella equal to anything I've ever seen in Andalusia, weird stuff from Portugal that smelled divine, curries and string-hoppers from Sri Lanka, English country hog roasts, artisan breads, a confit of beef cooked for 17 hours in wine and herbs, another confit of chicken, oodles of vegetarian grub, spicey lamb dishes from North Africa and Turkey, sushi and far more from Japan and on and on and on.. The entire square packed with hundreds of office workers, each patiently queuing for his or her chosen favourite, all licking their lips at the prospect of what was to come.. But not for the one who had just eaten his kipper. I'll know better next time.. Recommended! |
