The symbol of a horizontal line with three lines of an arrow below is an Ordnance Survey benchmark. Although current OS mapping no longer shows these, there is a web site at www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/benchmarks/ which shows the benchmarks in each 1 km square of the National Grid. You need to enter the grid reference for the SW corner of the square. The square with grid reference TQ2078 has over 30 benchmarks, including the one next to Winkworths at reference TQ 2072 7846, described as "P Wall Junc No273 Chiswick High Rd E Face" and the horizontal line is at 6.389m above Datum (sea level) and 0.4m above the ground. |
