THE CHISWICK PENSIONER WHO HAS TO SWEEP THE STREETS

In Stalinist Russia, they used to make the grandmothers sweep the streets. But I never thought that this could happen to me. Yet since I arrived to live in the Borough of Hounslow in 2013, I have been so disgusted by the squalor of our local alleyway* that I have felt compelled to pick up my broom and sweep the streets myself.

Not once, not twice, but over and over again as the beer cans, booze bottles, fast food wrappers and, yes, HUMAN SHIT, pile up as fast as I can remove them

Shovelling garbage is no job for a pensioner, yet nobody in authority seems to care about our alley - and I'm talking here about a public thoroughfare to the tube station used by dozens of men, women and children every day.

Of course I wrote to the Council, months ago, only to be fobbed off with specious arguments about 'problems of ownership' or the occasional one-off sweep.  My repeated requests for anti-litter notices have simply been ignored.

Meanwhile the filth keeps coming and with it gangs of foreign workmen, who gather nightly in the darkest part of the alley where they drink and relieve themselves. So what the hell, it's no-mans land. Let's chuck our cans over the fences and smash a few bottles too . . .

Yesterday, I went down to the alley where I spent two hours gathering up the beer cans and the vodka bottles.  They filled two black rubbish bags - to bursting.  Today my 73-year-old husband took them to the tip.

And the alleyway looks beautiful . . . till tomorrow.
