Very interesting study carried out by the LSE recently. They have analysed schools' policies towards mobile / smart phones in schools, and grade results. The evidence clearly shows that schools which ban all phones see a 6% improvement in grades, and the effect of banning is an average 1 grade improvement in students' exam results. Both the Chief Inspector of Schools, and OFSTED have responded to this study by saying "Any school head worth his / her salt would immediately ban all mobile phones in school, as a result of this study". We get told that our kids "must have" mobile phones now, so that they can let us know if they are going to be late home, or if they get stuck somewhere, and so on. Of course, this is codswallop, all my friends tell me their kids NEVER use their phone to contact them, or let them know what they are doing. My kids are the same. None of them answers a text / email / call, asking where they are. No. They use it to gain 24 hour access to twit-face-snap-gram, or to watch youtube videos of people chopping vegetables or small children unwrapping presents. I have checked - this is what they are doing. They check snapchat under the desk in class. They spend all their time in break periods posting photos to instagram. They are waiting all day for the next opportunity to gaze at the screens. My vote would be for a 100% ban. Perhaps our kids would then start talking to each other a bit more and would learn some social skills which might reduce the number of them who think it's OK to sit in a restaurant and immediately get the phones out. Miserable old git rant over. |
