Thanks for some very interesting insights. What I find challenging here, is how polarised the situation is and what strong emotions it arouses. At one end of the scale there are people who don't think anybody should even have their IPhone in easy reach on a table and at the other, this use of technology is simply part of life however disruptive it might be to others. As I experienced and Dan Murphy witnessed, any attempt to suggestion or request to turn down volumes or even turn off is met with something between shock and outrage. Restaurants and other establishments will need to set some clear rules - it seems it can't easily be left to individual negotiation. It doesn't feel as if restaurants have properly confronted this issue. Perhaps we will have the equivalent of "quiet" coaches or marked areas of the restaurants where anything goes. But I am not prepared, as some have suggested, to simply walk out. |
