Last night (Friday) a friend and I were having dinner in Barnes restaurant around 9pm. there was a family with small kids. They started having a FaceTime conversation at high volume with the iPhone/ iPad speakers on. Our conversations were drowned in this noise. After about at least 10 minutes I finally had enough and went over to ask them, politely and quietly, if they might turn it down. The wife quickly did so, but the husband objected strongly. "this is a birthday party" - we are in touch with friends all around the world. How dare you get in the way of our party." Our meals resumed but as the family left, the husband rounded on me again with general abuse. When he finally left, a lady from another table, who had been silent till then, congratulated me fulsomely and emotionally on my stance. So how should one deal with high volume facetiming/skyping, online chatting in restaurants and other shared spaces. Say nothing? take a stand? leave it to the restaurant management (nowhere to be seen at the time - although I spoke with them later.)? avoid restaurants? Has this type of thing happened to others? And what should one do? is this the new smoking? |
