I obtained my own domain name many years ago when I was connected via Demon Internet, and this allows me to route everything to another email address as required. Demon had been sold, and in my opinion service was likely to suffer. I notified all friends and family, and have since changed both my ISP and the domain name server, while the domain name is registered to me personally by the UK registration authority Nominet. If I change my ISP again I can change the route information to suit. Other domain names such as a .com may be registered by different authorities, and the charges depend on the type of domain name and your supplier, I have just paid 5 pounds + VAT per year to renew.
