Richard, I believe the word "nob" stems from "nobilite", meaning of high wealth or social position, as you say. When commoners were first permitted to attend Universities (through scholarships), the wealthy nobs used to write "sine nobilite" on their doors, to mark them out as poor commoners, pretending to be part of the wealthy social elite. And "sine nobilite" became the word snob. Carry on... |
