Dan - I'm assuming you are scared of dogs? Dogs give off many signals before they would bite and to be honest I'm sure a lot of bites would be avoided if people knew them and appropriate action taken - now with my pup and the baby they were not in anyway in contact with each other just copying the baby couldn't grab her nor confine her in anyway - the dogs tummy was flat on the ground and just scooting around with the baby a good 6/7 ft betwen them - this was not dangerous - the dog was able to get away I was sat there as were her parents and many dog savvy people - neither were in danger from each other - if my dog had had a chew of a resource she felt threatened with and a baby crawled over - would I trust her 100% no of course not. There was no irresponsibility here because all were supervised at all times - my own take on this is one thing my dogs must do is respect children. Dogs lick their lips, yawn, growl, snarl or bark if they do not like something their bodies stiffen - some their heckles go up, they can also wag their tails in a rapid manor in a state of heightened stimulation - others cower with their tail betwen their legs - these last ones are the ones most likely to give no warning when biting because they are very scared. If you are ever approached by an aggressive dog always turn to the side children you should tell to hold their arms up high and turn slowly - nothing is set in stone as with any animal but if you are sensible and use common sense ensure your dogs are well socialised etc - but Dan you are right no dog can be trusted 100% I wouldn't put my dogs or a child in that position where I thought either were in danger to the other. I've have had a dog who was petrified of children he was always fine with my own but I would have never had had him around any child anywhere not on a lead or in the home. I was bitten a few times as a child myself so I do know how awful it can be - not a risk worth taking! |
