"The employees - whether the guy in the mailroom or the chief executive - can then choose whether they wish to work for that money or go somewhere else."
The problem is that most people are not in any position to be that fussy, you simply cannot justify paying the lower orders cr*p money by airily declaring 'go somewhere else'. Everyone has the right surely, to be paid the rate for the job regardless of whether or not they are at the top or bottom of the pile? The people at the top are only as good as the people at the bottom doing the real work, why is it that lots of these CEOs or whatever make a colossal b*lls-up then walk away with a barrowload of money? Those further down would get the sack for mistakes, probably that have far less serious consequences and get nothing? It's an exclusive club that looks after its own, yet at the same time begrudges others decent wages and union representation. Look at the fuss over the tube strikes, everyone bangs on about what they earn, well, there's a lot more people earning a damned site more and whose actions can have far greater consequences on our lives yet no-one complains about that.
