Another aspect of the chain convenience stores is the number of delivery vans required to service them. As mentioned the stores aren't big, shelf space is at a premium, so they can't afford to have big stock rooms. That means the supermarket chains use delivery vans as, in effect, "mobile stock rooms" with multiple deliveries per day to the convenience stores. It can be argued that the supermarkets aren't paying the true cost of having all these delivery vans on the road, in terms of the congestion and pollution they are creating on city streets but you can predict that addressing this will also increase prices to the customer. |
