Two things: 1) Book as early as possible 2) Try to avoid obvious peak times - leaving early morning often helps as does avoiding Fridays - the 2nd October being a Friday I get a staff discount on lightly used Virgin trains on that line and the latest they're available even now is on the 14:07 - the cheapest train being the 11:07, so if you're travelling on a Friday and want the fastest journey leave by lunchtime or pay through the nose. Alternatively the London Midland only option to Liverpool is likely to be cheaper but take a lot longer - I can find a £20.50 fare on their website at 18:49 but it takes 3.5 hours with a change of train. |
