"Chiswick has improved its status over the last 30 years or so. When I as a child it didn't have the same cachet so maybe when they created the boroughs as they are today, they didn't take into account residents' sensibilities." I actually don't believe I just read that, I too grew up in Chiswick my husband was born there and it was a predominantly working class area with not a few theatrical digs because of the Chiswick Empire, and a half way decent high street. Sod 'cache and sensibilities' - Chiswick has been - like many areas in London - gentrified, with the consequential hike in property prices, which has completely changed the demographic. It is popular because it is central and has brilliant transport links to almost anywhere. It isn't that special and neither are the people who live there, some' getting over yourselves' would not be out of place. |
