But it hardly helps when so many people are disillusioned with the local political representation. We all like to think that we are part of something and can work with other people to make the place where we live better, instead of which we are shut out and treated like idiots. I rather suspect most of us object most strongly to getting the bum's rush over local projects when a simple straightforward dialogue between local residents and the council is all that is needed. I agree we elect people to make decisions on our behalf and you couldn't hold a virtual referendum on everything, but there are always going to be issues that will be controversial and must be discussed and consulted on, and councillors should be sensitive to those, not act like some swaggering playground bully. It is a question of balance and it is one that this council just doesn't get, because if and when they ever do, then and only then will a lot of us think that Hounslow is an O.K. place to live. |
