I'm sure there are many subtleties involved Claire. Unfortunately the Bill takes no account of any of them, which is why the leadership's decision to abstain makes Labour as a party as much use to those on the pointed end of these cuts as the proverbial chocolate teapot.

A sounder indicator however might be the other example that I used, that is the unwillingness of all but a tiny number of his fellow MPs to back Corbyn's candidacy out of conviction.
