It's a fair point that you make Claire and in actual fact I'm not a person who usually likes using broad brush terminology like "left" and "right" precisely because it can be so misleading.  But like some others I do sometimes resort to it out of laziness.

In this context though I was thinking in broad terms of the traditional, in some respects socialist Labour "left" versus the post-Blair "modernisers" and neoliberals of the Labour "right".  Thought of in this way, Corbyn could reasonably be said to be of the left and his three rivals to be of the right.

Bearing in mind that all but 48 Labour MPs abstained on the defining Welfare Bill and only a dozen or so were prepared to nominate Corbyn out of genuine support, I think it would be safe to place the majority on the right of the divide.
