Anne Williams explained Help! My bay tree - in a tub in the front garden - is dying, and I have no idea what I'm doing doing wrong. I water it when it feels dry (often), ... Bay trees have waxy leavers and so don't lose a lot of water, even in hot weather. At a guess when you say "when it feels dry" you mean the top one or two inches of soil in the pot have dried out. Which they will do in hot weather, due to evaporation. However that doesn't necessarily mean the soil around the roots has dried out. Quite possibly the exact opposite more especially if the bottom of the pot has no drainage. The roots may be waterlogged and starved of oxygen which can be verified, or not by laying the plant down and easing it out of the pot. If it is waterlogged then as much soil, compost should be carefully removed from the roots which should be allowed to dry out in the shade and any obviously rotten roots trimmed away. Then the drainage improved - if there are no holes in the pot and no means of doing so - ornamental terracotta etc then loads of gravel in the bottom around 1/3 volume and repotted as suggested earlier. michael adams |
