If we had joined at the start or soon after it would have been excellent - Europe was rebuilding after WW2 and growing rapidly. Our voice would have been heard as the foundation stones were laid.

In the event we joined just at the wrong time. Growth within the EU has been slow ever since we joined and well below that in the rest of the world.

The question we must ask for the sake of our children and grandchildren is where do we wish our great nation to be in 50 years time? Perhaps more pertinently where do our children and grandchildren wish our great nation to be in 50 years time.

This is not the usual round the kitchen table discussion about income tax rates and straight cucumbers but something much more profound.

Unfortunately there is no graceful way of leaving the EU but at least we are not tied in to the ghastly Euro currency.
