Interesting to speculate on what would have happened to Greece had they not been in the EU and the Eurozone. Obviously the drachma would have rapidly lost value, but would they have got themselves into such a mess without the expectation of the EU safety net ? As far as the UK is concerned, I still think as I did in the 1970s - we would be better off sticking to free trade agreements without the rest of the "ever closer union" stuff that Ted Heath blandly assured us was never going to happen. Given that the rest of the EU sells more to us than we do to them, it would not be in their interests to set up punitive sanctions against the UK following a Brexit. And if the Scots want to stay in without the rest of the UK, then good luck to them - Greece 2.0 would be on the way. |
