Sorry, Keith, I think that's a load of tosh. The Greek people were asked: "Would you like to vote for auterity or not?" Not surprisingly, they voted "Not". Would turkeys vote for Christmas? Especially when their Prime Minister was comforting them with promises that voting No would open the door to far more lenient terms. And Clare, yes Ireland, and 1 or 2 others, have undergone austerity and come out the other side. But their plight was not as bad as Greece's - admittedly due to their own government cock-ups. The situation we're now in is: Do we continue to bailout endlessly this country, which has no chance, realistically, of emerging from endless austerity. It cannot repay its loans now. As time goes by the situation will grow worse. Or do we try to end this situation for once and for all? Cancelling the debts would be dramatic, but effective, providing it is accompanied by a realistic programme to end the crisis. Sure, some other countires, as Keith points out, might feel indignant, but whatever steps you take will arouse opposition from various quarters. This is a way out. |
