E3 bus ("bus 1") arrives at Chiswick Police Station approx 430pm July 4th. Driver sits running engine for a few minutes, apparently thinking. Very still, but definitely breathing. Driver gets out, leaving engine running and chats to another driver waiting at the bus stop. Several minutes pass. Another E3 bus ("bus 2") comes and goes. Driver - when asked - reluctantly admits that there is no driver for Bus 1. There should be one, but he isn't there and nobody knows where he is or indeed who he is. He also says that he hadn't noticed the following Bus 2, or he would have got passengers to transfer to it from Bus 1. In any case his shift has finished so it's not his problem. The other driver states that he is waiting for another bus and cannot drive this one. More minutes pass. Drivers chat and ignore passengers. No announcements made. Eventually another E3 arrives ("bus 3"). Passengers seek to board Bus 3, but driver tries to make them pay again. After a while this is sorted and passengers board. Bus 3 sits behind Bus 1 for several minutes. This driver also sits thinking, motionless. Driver leaves Bus 3 and gets into Bus 1 (now empty) which he then drives off. Another driver gets onto Bus 3 and presses various buttons for some minutes. He then thinks a while, leaves the bus for a few further moments and chats to someone else. 20 minutes after initial arrival he gets back on Bus 3 and after a few more moments of thought drives off. Meanwhile another E3 ("bus 4") has arrived so the two move in convoy. Rest of journey uneventful. I should have walked! |
