I entirely agree. But I would wish to add that I am getting somewhat tired of it being painted in purely class terms. Hunts attract people from the complete social spectrum and whilst I have no interest in hunting and do not regard it as an effective method of controlling the population, it is most emphatically not just a "toffs" pastime, and does employ a large number of people in rural areas who otherwise would have no employment or income. And what happens to the packs of cute beagles? But hey, why bring nuanced argument into it? Another thought: We don't (that I ever recall) see cries for the banning of angling and coarse fishing (which involves catching and "playing" a fish until exhausted enough to be caught), might that be because it has been traditionally regarded as a "working class" pursuit? There seem to be some double standards in play here. |
