I thought I'd put some numbers to this tall tale. The gravitational force acting on you by an object is proportional to that object's mass and inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the centre of that object. Here's the masses and distances expressed in Earth masses and Earth radii. Earth: 1 Earth mass 1 Earth radius to the centre Jupiter: 318 Earth masses 92,000 Earth radii to Jupiter Neptune: 17 Earth masses 675,000 Earth radii to Neptune Using these figures, the proportionality rules above, and a bit of rounding off then the force acting on you by Jupiter is 0.000005% that caused by the Earth. The equivalent figure for Neptune is 0.000000005%. No one is going to be floating off! |
