Yes the newer waterborne paints are more vulnerable to damage and bird droppings left in hot sun make it worse. I had a 1987 BMW 316 for 23 years from new and don't recall any bird damage. My present 2009 Ford has a couple of small blemishes caused by bird droppings and I removed it with care. Removing it as soon as possible seems to be key. It's certainly very annoying.
