I wasn't aware the Labour Party were in power. There was an election recently that confirmed this, I believe, and which incidentally gave that party every incentive to conclude that the country prefers centre-right growth at any costs policies over centre left environment first policies, since that's what we bloody voted for. This is David Cameron's mess, in other words* - if he came straight out today and said 'Actually I'll ignore this huge, expensive report I commissioned to give an independent, impartial view and go for Gatwick' there's nothing Labour could do about it, although of course he'd immediately be taken to court by Heathrow, who he's just armed with a huge, expensive report that says they should be allowed to expand. Statesmanlike stuff. Anyway, instead of the tedious party politics, how about a constructive discussion about the way forward that focuses on using the few remaining powers the public has left to try and stop destructive development. * Or, of course, if he'd excluded Heathrow from the scope of the Commission on the reasonable grounds of clear democratic opposition. |
