Asking the opinion of people who already cycle what is needed to get more people cycling isn't the answer - the question should be directed at the people who aren't cycling because you will need to get an awful lot of them to get modal share up to even 10%, let alone 15%. Saying "Oh, you just need to do what I do" won't work. I don’t completely share that view. People who already cycle can tell you what attracted them to it in the first place and why they enjoy it (or at any rate why they still do it) and what things could be done to improve their lot. Listening to people who do not cycle (and may never cycle) and responding to their reasons for not cycling is a very risky business. What has driven the massive increase in commuter cycling in London in the last 10 years? It is not the few bits of blue paint Ken & Boris have provided – though obviously they would like to think this. IMHO it is a change in mind-set to a more physical and adventurous lifestyle – the Jack Ass effect you might say. It’s a bit like asking people why they don’t go to church. They say it’s because Church is old fashioned. Results of the survey lead to the trendy vicars with guitars who annoy the remaining congregation who enjoyed a Wesley hymn and the church organ - but has no effect in attracting the people who claimed this was the reason they did not attend because in reality the surveyed had no intention of ever going to church and acting on their opinions has been counterproductive. |
