This is true and this is part of the challenge. You don't find much opposition to segregation (compared to those who champion it) As a result there is a massive danger of people feeling too comfortable and having a false sense of security and they are exposed once the segregation ends. Its taken London a while to catch up but engineers I know are really taking all the knowledge gained and the lessons learnt from the past into account on most of their new designs. Have seen a lot of stuff from various boroughs, consultancies and TfL and am quite hopeful things will be getting a lot better all the time. Like Al says it doesn't help though when umpteen people are killed in car crashes, knocked over or many other ways yet you only ever hear about the cyclist in the newspaper. Over 600,000 trips a day on a bike in London alone. Pretty good odds your going to be safe and hopefully its only going to get safer. |
