"problem with left turning vehicles can only be properly fixed by educating motorists" To be honest, I think anything that purely relies on education is doomed to failure. Physical infrastructure that forces safer driver behaviour is more effective. For left turns, there are design options like the splay of the corner and islands separating the cycle lane that can actually make the turn more difficult for the driver and mean they need to look at the cycle lane (or footway). Typical UK car-centred design means making the turn easy and ignoring the existence of the cycle lane or footway, hence the give ways signs. |
