I cycle 8 times a week along a road with a segregated cycle path. From personal experience I can say for certain that you are more likely to be cut up or hit by left turning vehicles when cycling on the cycle path than when cycling on the road. Knowing this, the road planners put give way signs on the cycle path at every junction - which makes the cycle path so unattractive that you rarely see any cyclists using it. When they put segregated cycle lanes in the east end you tube videos showed motorists overtaking then turning left and cutting up cyclists. The problem with left turning vehicles can only be properly fixed by educating motorists, or we take the point of view, as we do when pedestrians get hit by left turning motorists, that it's not front page news. |
