Yes the green phasing is a great idea and is something that is trying to happen in London. Works great abroad but the massive difference in countries like Holland is that they actually removed traffic years ago and streets less desirable for cars so its a lot easier to do. Hopefully we will catch up. Regarding majority of traffic its a lovely thought but doesn't work that way. Buses still carry the most people across the city and you delay bus journey times...well it simply isn't going to happen as they wont let it. Even if the buses do get through if the impact on the metal boxes means a junction is gridlocked because of a queue going back to it from another one then everything breaks down, people become more aggressive and take more risks and everyone is in more danger. Be great if all the lorries could deliver through the evening. Fine for the likes of the big supermarkets but the guy who owns the Nisa and Budgen stores is going to be working a heck of a lot of hours if he is waiting for late night deliveries. Great that Crossrail are doing that. Hopefully more can follow their example. Am not really disagreeing with anything you say as all are valid points but my point is there are no easy solutions out there. Even the dutch and danish have high fatality rates. Lets see how the big push on segregation works out. There are many against segregation and there are some very good reasons behind that. Again though its only going to cater for the direct routes. Isn't going to protect you at a place like mansion house tube station. Cycle safe people. Leave the headphones in the bag and don't switch off. |
