Another tragic accident, another headline, maybe another tweak to try to fix the problem. The wrong problem. If we had the same headline every time a pedestrian is killed then maybe we would start making progress. Three or four time as many pedestrians are killed every year in London as cyclists but we never hear about them. OK there are more pedestrians but they are theoretically fully segregated and protected - how do so many get killed?. One statement I read recently may give some clue - it said the most widely disobeyed road rule in the UK is the one giving priority to pedestrians when turning. Other countries enforce this rule much more robustly. We need to prioritise all forms of non-motorised transport and make cities much safer places by changing motorist behaviour. |
