No argument here that ASLs are only a basic level of cycle service but getting cyclists in front of traffic at a stop lines wins over having them dotted about all over the place every time. I would imagine a change in law must come about eventually where large vehicles will be forced to have a camera in the front and on their nearside. I don't know why this isn't the case now. It exists on certain cars and in this day an age there should not be one new large vehicle leaving a factory without this easily implemented technology. The new cycle superhighways for the most part are having segregated ahead lanes going with ahead traffic whilst the left turners are held. This will make a lot of junctions a lot safer but you cannot do that everywhere at every junction. There would be chaos to traffic capacity if an extra traffic stage is implemented at every signal and this is what it would take. If I had my way only buses and taxis would be allowed in the city during peak hours but this would probably not work very well as taking good vehicles doing their deliveries over a 12-15 hour period and telling them they can only now do it within an off peak 10-4 period means you are going to be sending an awful lot of big vehicles into the city at once instead of being spread out and you are putting off peak cyclists at more risk. |
