ASLs are part of the problem with current infrastructure because with the filter lane down the left and the box at the front, they put people EXACTLY in the blind spots of HGVs (assuming the ASL box is free and a vehicle hasn't stopped in it...) They aren't suitable for high levels of cycling, because as you've said, they fill up like shown in this photo. https://departmentfortransport.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/perfect-asl-scenario.jpg?w=500&h=375 And if the filter lane and ASL box is full of cyclists, how many HGVs hang back? Nope, they drive right up so all the cyclists are in their blind spot. At least they should be aware this is the case. ASLs simply aren't used in countries with the most cyclists like the Netherlands or Denmark - they would use something like cycle-specific lights to separate in "time" if it isn't possible to separate in "space". |
