"I guarantee though that a lot of people will ignore this for a more direct line down the carriageway and then everyone will be up in arms when someone gets knocked off their bikes. The mentality of cyclists needs to change. Most of us including myself grew up bombing around without a helmet with a fearless attitude, jumping of steps and going wherever we wanted." I hear what you are saying but the reality is that the people being killed, if the reports are accurate, are not so much the fearless red light jumpers but actually the more compliant, possibly timid, riders - creeping up the inside lane. If people avoid the traffic where they can (as you seem to be advising) then in the circumstances where they have no choice but to face the busy junction their lack of experience will be a handicap. It is unrealistic to expect there will ever be cycle only routes from A to B so some hardening to heavy traffic is essential. |
