The City of London have plans in consultation at the moment which means a scheme is about to go to detailed design for construction. Its a shame its too late for this poor soul but it is coming. Would be great if hgv's were moved from the roads but there are always going to be large vehicles delivering to the thousands of stores all over London and there are always going to be buses all over the place. Can't stress enough the importance of education on the bikes and hate to say it but the majority of these deaths are where people have put themselves in a situation they shouldn't have been in. There are many things coming in the next couple of years for cyclists but at junctions you have to take unbelievable care. I was looking at the new designs for Vauxhall the other day and yes there is a provision for getting across the junction with a series of segregated paths and toucan crossings. I guarantee though that a lot of people will ignore this for a more direct line down the carriageway and then everyone will be up in arms when someone gets knocked off their bikes. The mentality of cyclists needs to change. Most of us including myself grew up bombing around without a helmet with a fearless attitude, jumping of steps and going wherever we wanted. Fast forward 20 years and them same people are now getting on bikes again to go to work and are simply not as smart as they think they are when it comes to safe cycling. If you are at a stop light in a vehicles blind spot you are asking for trouble. The technology will be there soon enough for drivers to know what is beside them but until then just stay out the way!! London is a pretty safe city to cycle round if you plan your route well and don't rely too much on a false sense of comfort that an advisory cycle lane might give you. I cycle from Kew to London Bridge and have little interaction with commuter traffic. |
