8 cyclist deaths in London so far this year, 7 caused by HGVs, 6 of the 8 were women, all the women were killed by HGVs. If this happened on a construction site, it would have been shut down. Firstly, why are there large vehicles with known dangers mixing in close proximity with people? HGVs are banned in London from 9pm to 7am (so not to disturb people's sleep..) and as a result, they all hits the roads at peak commuting time. The road haulage industry doesn't have a good record here. Last month City of London police removed 95 HGVs from the roads in the City because of unsafe loads or unlicensed drivers. Secondly, existing cycle facilities in London are often appallingly designed with lanes and advanced stop boxes that put people right in the blind spot of large vehicles. Thirdly, there were known safety issues at Bank junction where the fatality happened today. The City of London produced a proposal several years ago to address these. Then nothing happened. |
