A group of us were talking about this forum in the Hogarth club a little while ago and we all expressed the view that we tend to keep off it because it so often descends into being such a horrible place. A forum I do visit is AV Forums and it is a model of how to run a forum and how to prevent the behaviour you see here. The owner has recently run a series of threads asking members to comment on how it is run, the behaviour they want to encourage and discourage. Points I remember include that they actively seek to discourage cliquey behaviour (to put it mildly this is an issue here), they seek to keep threads on topic (ditto with all the conspiracy theory nonsense) and welcome new posters. In order to do that the moderators join in, they participate in the threads and they have the power to close threads, warn members if their behaviour is transgressing the rules and to issue bans - from a few days as a warning to permanent exclusion as a last resort. It is well and openly moderated and the members join in the debate on how it is moderated. This forum is an example of exactly what they are trying to avoid. Personally I, and I suspect many others, will keep off it whilst so much of it is so unpleasant. |
