People on all sides of the political divide would admit to Blair's genius at this point. Some might call it evil genius but it would be unfair not to acknowledge the massive achievements of his time in office - the minimum wage, civil partnerships, huge improvements to the NHS, peace brokered in Northern Ireland and Sierra Leone, the most sustain period of economic growth this country has seen in modern times are just a few items on a very long list. The Iraq War is undoubtedly a blot on his copy book but simplistic judgments on this issue always fail to recognise the complexity of the decisions that needed to be made at the time. The best evidence for his genius is that David Cameron essentially used him as the blueprint for his own career adopting a socially progressive stance combined with the rhetoric of fiscal conservatism. This gives the Labour party a big problem in that the only path back to Government is the one set out by Tony Blair but their opponents are taking the same road. Choosing Jeremy Corbyn as a leader only makes sense if the most important thing for the Labour party is to regain lost ground in Scotland. |
