S.Powell suggested " In my experience it seems to me that the people who end up in those jobs are in it for the power trip" Whereas in my experience people interested in a power trip don't "end up" in any job, they actively go seeking a particular type of job. People who "end up" in any sort of job often have very little choice short of the dole queue I had a short conversation with a security man at Heathrow in the security hall while repacking my stuff, and without looking directly at me he explained that everyone, both security and passengers was being closely monitored by CCTV cameras. He needn't have told me that - although it seems obvious when you think of it - and had I been a "secret passenger" paid to monitor security staff he could quite possibly have lost his job over it. From which its easy to see that anyone seen being especially considerate to passengers might be singling themselves out for the dole queue. S. Powell then went on to suggest: "I know they've got an important job to do," It's the exact opposite actually. Its precisely because much of it is so unecessary, that all the people whose jobs depend on it, have to go out of their way to pretend otherwise. Basically its impossible politically to admit that most of it is a complete waste of money and that millions could be saved worldwide by putting thousands of security staff on the dole. And so in order to maintain the pretence its imperative that nobody is allowed to smile. Ever. michael adams |
