In my view religious institutions should be treated no differently to other places of entertainment - i.e. they are businesses. Just because a lot of mumbo jumbo is wrapped around the activity that takes place it is fundamentally the same as, say, a comedy club. A guy stands at the front spouting and the audience contribute to his livelihood. The audience come away feeling better for the experience the presenter eats tonight. I notice various claims that this and other religious institutions should get special treatment because of charitable work - well lots of charitable work takes place in schools, clubs of all different types, scouts, yes even the Tabard has volunteers organizing cricket matches. It is obvious from the wording of the permit application that these permits were actually intended for people attending "services". According to the Vihara website the only "services" published are on Sunday when no parking permits are required. So one questions how the Vihara has managed to obtain the permits in the first place. So karma has come to the Buddhists - they used the permits in a dodgy way and permits have gone away. |
