| Will, while your zeal to try and ensure people with different beliefs to yourself don't get any support whatsoever from the state is impressive you may be getting irate about the wrong thing here. Ealing Council's view that a religious group should be treated in the same way as a business may seem like good news to you in that it could be financially crippling for the Vihara but, from a broader perspective, this rather innovative way of thinking from local parking bureaucrats may actually be quite a boon for God botherers in general. If they are to be treated equally with businesses then they also gain the entitlements which come with that status. This would mean that faith groups can now apply for parking permits which they previously were unable to obtain. The new interpretation could also mean that developers of flats which are excluded from applying for residents' permits could include a small multi-faith chapel in the building and suggest to people buying flats that they form a religious group based there thereby enabling them to buy a permit. If you were really serious about cleansing society of all religious influences I would be campaigning to extend the benefit given by Ealing Council to all voluntary associations so that the scouts, Weight Watchers, local choirs and the Will Watson Society for the Ending of Council Help for Buddhists could also apply for business permits. |
