The more I read about this vanity project the more I am convinced that it is a colossal waste of money in a time of cuts in our public services. There is talk of a large contribution from central government and now the Mayor has kindly volunteered £3m towards maintenance if the trust being set up can't find the dough. This after saying no such thing would be contemplated. Joanna Lumley is one of the prime supporters of this idea, quite why the rest of us will be expected to stump up via the Mayor's budget for some whim of an actress is quite mystifying. Apparently the speculation is that some big fund raiser at Harrods will tempt Qatar's investment sovereign wealth fund to cough up. Would that so much effort could be put into actually helping people put roofs over their heads in London.
