I have seen so many crazy bits of building where the owner has done something daft to keep favor with the 'resident neighbour' only for them to move away! To an extent every omelette involves broken eggs and neighbours have their opinions - some applications get objections and letters of support - what does one do then :) Basements in some areas - where the sub structure is not suitable, can cause some movement or diversion of water courses and this should be assessed by a proper company etc. The Thames thing and insurance is a bit of a red herring - we are protected by the Thames Barrier - LONDON is on a flood plane! and whole areas in grove park were built (100 years ago) with basements! - my last one in grove park you can see the river from the house! Loads of grove park has basement flats (sometimes semi basements) in the original designs which have never suffered from flooding. (and have no flood protection). James |
