"It is fairly obvious that a Tory / UKIP agreement of some sort would have been cobbled together. So the country would now be under a more right wing government than we have now. The large number of people who voted for LAB GRN & SNP would be completely without any influence to set policy despite having lots of seats." I don't think we can assume those things at all Will. It is likely that people would vote much differently under a system in which every vote counted. Literally millions of people are thought to have voted tactically last month in order to give the party they disliked the least the best chance of winning against the party they disliked the most. Is that really a process to be enthused about or one that is likely to encourage more people to become engaged? In any event shaping the political system in such a way as to avoid outcomes that we would prefer not to happen is not very far removed from dictatorship. The solution to restraining the influence of organisations such as UKIP lies ultimately in education. There were other losers as well, such as the Greens and of course the Liberal Democrats. Stitching up the system in such a way as to pretend that a third of the voters don't exist is not sustainable in the long term. |
