Helen I think the advice you've been given so far is more targeted at the state of play in existence before POPLA (Parking on Private Land Appeals) came into being or to actual fines, issued by Local Authorities. A quick google search threw up this thread - I've previously found discussions on pepipoo to be useful: http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?showtopic=92343 I'd suggest you do a little research into this yourself - but I'd be wary of any postings that don't mention POPLA or are dated before around 2012 or 2013.  The rules before this were much easier for motorists to understand but may mislead you if you follow them now.
