Clearly our First Past the Post voting system is total anachronism. The General Election of 2015 was the absolute last straw. It's achaic, unrepresentative, unjust and unfair. It's a late middle ages (or earlier) voting system operated poorly in the 21st century. It needs to be replaced immediately by proper Proportional Representation with regions and lists. Britain is one of the few Western "democracies" still to use FPTP. That and a few of our ex-colonies. Consequently our voices are not being properly heard and vast numbers of the electorate are unrepresented. When is the gothic FPTP finally going to be laid to rest? Oh yes FPTP has its supporters - mostly the current MPs and government. Its simple, you get a local representative for your area, not picked from a long list. And it keeps out minority and new parties - new entrants to the grubby world of UK politics, which appears to be the only thing its there for. So in the past its totally kept the likes of the BNP etc out of parliament - but that can also be achieved under PR using minimum percentage thresholds etc. Write to your MP? Fat chance, as they appear totally happy with keeping things just as they are ie. us not properly represented and them in government. |
