Not long before Gunnersbury goes the same way now that it is effectively in privitised hands. One attempt to site a school there has failed for the time being but often, the developers will make an knowingly over the top proposal to draw fire, well aware that campaigners will be exhausted and less likely to resist or relived that the alternative is "not as bad". As it is, parks and similar resources (Kew Gardens and London Zoo spring to mind) are now obliged to hold as many commercial events as possible to bring in revenue. Any peace and quiet that one might hope to have at popular times is shattered by amplified music or access blocked by filming, marquees, weddings, pop concerts etc. When I first moved here 35 years ago, I used to pay £1 (already a massive increase from the 1d of my childhood that had been in place since Kew opened) and sit and read under a tree. Now, at £15 it has become a tourist venue or somewhere to take a visitor rather than a unique resource for Londoners to enjoy regularly. |
