Dan, Felicity's argument wasn't simply that you shouldn't muzzle a dog because it makes it unhappy. She said that an otherwise benign dog became a hazard because of its habit of bumping into people to try and dislodge the muzzle. This happened to me last year when a Dalmatian bounded up to me and nearly knocked me off my feet. The owner was very apologetic and explained the situation but I am still reasonably nimble and an elderly person possibly would have fallen and broken a hip if it had happened to them. If all dogs were muzzled this rare occurrence would become a daily one. I do despair of people for whom animals have clearly become the principle object of affection and have a disproportionate regard for their welfare. If an animal is delicious I will eat it with relish but I would not want to see any animal suffer unnecessarily. Your totally ill-considered proposal to muzzle all dogs in public would deliver a negligible benefit if any for a very appreciable harm and you cannot totally dismiss the animal's well-being when looking at the cost-benefit of your idea. Even if you did there would still be multiple objections. As these have been spelled out to you in this thread and you have become more strident in your views I doubt anyone will be able to convince you of the self-evident idiocy of your scheme. |
